When size does matter - the iconic Hollywood sign
News

One of the most crucial decisions you’ll have to make when designing a sign for your business is its size. Go too small, and your customers won’t be able to read your text, identify your logo or even decipher your business name from a distance. Go too big, and your oversized sign could have a negative impact on the professional aesthetic of your commercial premises.

To help you get the size of your sign just right, we’ve put together a list of the most important dos and don’ts when it comes when sizing up your sign. Do: Think about your location When deciding how big or how small your sign needs to be, it’s very important to begin by taking a look at the sign’s proposed location. More often than not, looking at where the sign is going to go will give you an idea of how big it needs to be. If your commercial premise is on a street with other businesses, take a look at their signage to see what works best. If your sign is going to be placed in a relatively high position, make sure it’s big enough and clear enough to the seen from the ground. If it’s going to be placed around eye level, make sure it’s small enough for customers to read without the need to take a step backwards. Don’t: Block windows and doors Generally, when signs are placed on commercial properties there are windows and doors that need to be considered when creating the design. The last thing you want is for your sign to be so big that it blocks either light or access to your premises, so take careful measurements before you go to print. Do: Consider your design The size of your sign and its design are closely linked. The space you have to work with will determine how much information you can comfortably fit into the space, how large your company name can be and how visible your sign will be from a distance. Before you decide on a definitive size for your sign, begin working on your design. This should give you an idea of how your text, images and other features will fit into the space and in what size the sign will work best. Don’t: Forget your budget Budget is always an important consideration for commercial sign projects. In most cases, the bigger the sign you commission, the more the finished product will cost, so if you’re working to a tight budget you might want to speak to your printer before you begin work on the design.
