Signs Express (Glasgow) Light up the Kirkcudbright Dark Skies Visitor Centre
With very few people living in the Dark Sky Park, set in the 300 square miles of Galloway Forest, it’s the perfect location for the ‘Dark Skies’ Visitor Centre, offering a weather-independent and family hours-friendly introduction to the area. Over 7,000 stars and planets are visible with the naked eye, and the bright band of the Milky Way is usually easy to see arching across the sky. Kirkcudbright Development Trust were the driving force behind the ‘Dark Skies’ Visitor Centre’ within the old Johnston School in Kirkcudbright and Signs Express (Glasgow) were delighted to be part of such a fantastic project.
With a 13-metre light box to create, branding various hands-on interactive displays including electromechanical exhibits, rocket launcher & a full dome planetarium along with a 45-metre star constellation, the project was going to require the teams expertise at Signs Express (Glasgow). Quite literally down to creating Saturn rings to compliment the suspended planet. At 3,000mm diameter and to be suspended from the ceiling our team went to work creating a suitable solution, to which the client was delighted. A combination of 10mm Black PVC, Birch Plywood structure and printed graphics really made this a special challenge.
Sitting at over 13 metres in length the light show’s large flex face box is the main feature within this wonderful facility. With over 900 individual LED’s, Signs Express (Glasgow) worked hand in hand with the appointed Designers (Glasgow Science Centre) to create a suitable, high-res graphic with selective enhanced properties. With NASA having to sign off on all final artwork design this really was ‘out of this world’.
Over 45 metres of a star constellation print was applied to the full perimeter wall, all on ACM panels with angled cuts creating a visually stunning effect. The photograph of the full installation really does capture the pride we all felt in achieving such a magnificent finish.
“The main light box is the first thing customers see as they enter Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium. The sharpness, vibrancy and overall quality is excellent. The astronaut light box is also much loved, with many visitors choosing to have their photos taken with it. We would recommend Signs Express to anyone wanting to 'wow' their customers.” Frances Coombey, Dark Space Planetarium Manager
