An Out of this World Experience

As part of an ongoing series of improvements to the five star Science Centre, its Planetarium has been totally transformed to a spectacular state-of-the-art full-dome digital Planetarium. As part of this project, Signs Express (Glasgow) has had the challenging task of organising and installing the department's expansive array of new displays and signage.

There were numerous elements to the work carried out by Signs Express (Glasgow), including five floor-to-ceiling banners each measuring 4.7m x 2m, printed wall graphics, hoardings and a double-sided suspended lightbox greeting people entering and bidding farewell to those leaving. Arguably, the largest part of the project was the creation of a 28 metre long, 3 metre high illuminated installation formed from 2 lightboxes measuring 12m x 3m and 16m x 3m respectively.

As you can imagine, a project of this scale has taken many months of planning and execution; in fact, the team at Signs Express (Glasgow) has worked tirelessly since June 2015 to design and create a functional solution to the Science Centre's needs. Their efforts have been rewarded with a stunning exhibition that will benefit everyone that walks through the doors.

Michael Kane, Signs Express (Glasgow's) Project Manager, commented on the success of the project: 'We really enjoy working with the Science Centre because they push us by providing original and innovative designs. It is also really rewarding to know that our hard work is resulting in the enjoyment of all the visitors to the Centre. I am extremely proud of all of my colleagues who have been involved in this project because we have utilised all of our extensive skills to complete it to the highest standard.'

Signs Express (Glasgow) was the favoured signage company for this project because of their previous work at the Glasgow Tower - also owned by the Glasgow Science Centre - which was opened last year and is the tallest free-standing building in Scotland and the tallest fully rotating free-standing building in the world. For that project, Graham Casey, owner of Signs Express (Glasgow), and his team overcame many obstacles to design and create a 9 metre long concave light box as well as a profusion of other signage solutions for that development.

John Brown, Astronomer Royal for Scotland - a long-time advocate for the digital projection system at Glasgow Science Centre - expressed his excitement for the unveiling of the project: 'The installation of the new digital system here at Glasgow Science Centre will help us to ignite curiosity and exceed the expectations of modern learners with inspirational, real-time content and state-of-the-art technology. It will be a fantastic resource for the people of Glasgow and beyond.'

With continual updates at the Science Centre always underway - to keep features fresh and exciting for their visitors - Signs Express (Glasgow) is hopeful of more projects coming its way and in fact, they tendered for and have already been awarded a role in the Powering the Future project on the Centre's second floor.

The grand unveiling of the Centre's Planetarium will take place on the 15th September in front of a privileged group of VIP's, including the team from Signs Express and Guest of Honour, Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell the world renowned Astrophysicist.
